Migrating WordPress Web Logs - Hand Done Vs Automatic Solutions

Generally speaking, if there is an easier way to get the job done, it will mean that there are some corners being cut. Or at least, that is true in mot cases, such as the case of the blogger who needs to move WordPress blogs from one host to the other. Here’s the thing. The manual process for this is quite painful, to say the least. Lots can go wrong, and to put it in simple terms, if there is an easier way, many bloggers tend to take it. Myself included.

Before I go too much further, lets talk about the options that are open to you at the moment. First things first, you can do it yourself manually. Not all that appealing considering that it is a time consuming task. You could also rely on someone else to do the job for you. Sure, if you hire an expert, this could work, but again, it is cost and time sensitive. You can also rely on software and automated solutions. Are these solutions reliable though?

There Is Risk Associated With Manual Processes

When it comes to doing anything manually, there is always going to be some kind of risk associated. We're all humans, right? I've slipped up from time to time, and I'm sure that you will too. That said, when you get a fair amount of practice, you can get the job done quite well. Consider what I did for example - I learned the process back to front, and I am not more than confident in my own ability to transfer a WordPress blog from one hosting account to the next with no error. That said, if I were to make one wrong move whilst exporting the database in phpMYadmin, then there would more than likely be trouble. Just weigh up your options, consider what is within your own level of skill, and move forward from there.

Reliability Of Software Solutions

I can completely understand people for their choices to not rely on applications and other automated solutions. It sounds risky, and with the amount of junk out there that promises to be able to do the job when only a small number of applications actually work, it is easy to be discouraged. I do trust only a small number of applications, but the trust that I have in these applications has been hard earned through a huge amount of testing that I have done on them.

In the case that you think that an automated solution is going to be best for you, by all means, seek a script rather than a plugin. Plugins don't work as well as standalone scripts, as they don't rely on the WordPress functionality in order to work. Just make sure that it is secure, it is tested, and most importantly, make sure it works!

So, lets come back to that question. Should you move WordPress blogs automatically, or with the use of software? Well, this is entirely up to you. The risks with each as just as common, but with a little common sense, I am sure that you will find a solution that works great for you. What path did I take? I went manual, because I managed to get good at the process, however, from time to time, I find that I need to get a job done super fast, so I rely on software to do the job for me.
